Volunteer Opportunities

Help Save the Bees Foundation needs you!

Help Save the Bees Foundation is an ALL-VOLUNTEER organization committed to raising the awareness of the importance of our pollinators, the crises they now face, and how community members can act to help save the bees.

You are receiving this announcement because you most likely checked a box on our newsletter signup form labeled “Volunteer”.  If you are local to the Reno/Sparks, Nevada area, and interested in helping us to help save the bees, then this letter is for you!  If not, please skip down to the bottom of this page and adjust your preferences.

We offer volunteer opportunities in three main areas:

1️⃣ Education – Kids & Bees Presentations

Several times each year we bring our “Kids & Bees” program to schools and day camps. These events include a short talk and five hands-on stations — with an observation hive of live honey bees, and often emerging leafcutter bees!

Upcoming: We just completed our summer session of day camps with Great Basin Outdoor School and Urban Roots.  We currently have no classrooms scheduled for Fall 2025.

Volunteers help with set-up, guiding kids at stations, and learning the program so we can expand in the future.

2️⃣ Community Outreach – Booth Staffing at Events

We participate in various festivals and markets to share pollinator knowledge and resources.

Typical booth includes: canopy, educational displays, native plant info, observation hive, and sometimes candle-rolling or product sales.

Upcoming:

Aug 23 – Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival (work a 4 hr shift, enjoy the rest of the day’s music!)

Sept 14 – Milk & Honey Festival (McKinley Arts Center)

3️⃣ Habitat Restoration – Pollinator Garden Work Parties

Our Valley Wood Wildlife Gardens Task Force creates and maintains a world-class demonstration garden showing residents how to replace chemical-heavy landscapes with pollinator- and bird-friendly habitats.

  • Meets monthly, 1st Friday.

  • Major work parties at Valley Wood Wildlife Gardens in spring, summer, and fall, each followed by a free public garden tour.

  • Upcoming: Sept 13 – In partnership with KTMB’s Tahoe River Cleanup at Valley Wood Park, followed by a Sept 20 seed-gathering (free) public tour with Reno City Horticulturist Ryan Sharrer.

Let us know which of these opportunities speaks to you, or if you’d like to get involved in another way. Our board meetings are open to the public — 3rd Fridays at 10 AM, Sierra View Library but please text or email to verify as we occasionally skip a month.

With gratitude,
